Two football legends to take part in World Cup draw in Qatar

FIFA World Cup champions German Lothar Matthäus and Brazilian Cafu will help conduct the draw for the final part of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, according to the official FIFA website.

The draw will take place on April 1st in Doha. Matthäus became the 1990 World Champion with the German national team and also won the European Championship in 1980. Cafu is a two-time world champion in the Brazilian national team (1994, 2002).

Also among the participants of the ceremony are the former record holder for the number of goals for the national teams Iranian Ali Daei, the Olympic champion Nigerian Jay-Jay Okocha, the former football player of the Australian national team Tim Cahill.

“I’m getting used to it, but it still gives me chills,” said Cafu, who will be playing in his third FIFA World Cup final after appearing in three straight finals in 1994, 1998, and 2002 and winning the cup twice. “It’s a sign that the World Cup is approaching.” It’s been over two decades since I became the last South American to win the World Cup, and it’s a memory I’ll never forget. It’s incomparable to playing in the World Cup, when your entire country comes to a halt to watch the game.”

The other assistants don’t require much introduction. In 1990, Lothar Matthäus led West Germany to victory. Tim Cahill scored Australia’s first-ever FIFA World Cup finals goal against Japan in 2006 and also represented the Socceroos in 2010, 2014, and 2018. 

Jay-Jay Okocha was a playmaking midfielder who helped Nigeria qualify for their first FIFA World Cup in 1994 and win the Olympic title two years later, while Tim Cahill scored Australia’s first-ever FIFA World Cup finals goal against Japan in 2006 and also represented the Socceroos in 2010, 2014, and 2018. Bora Milutinovi is the only coach in FIFA World Cup history to have led five different nations in five straight editions: Mexico (1986), Costa Rica (1990), USA (1994), Nigeria (1998), and China PR (1998).
